THE FAMILY of an Arbroath man stricken by a muscle-wasting illness is appealing for sponsors to help them go on one last family holiday.
Daniel Mathieson (22) suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a debilitating condition which has left him confined to a wheelchair for most of his life.
The Arbroath Herald reported recently on plans by the Mathieson family to take Daniel on his dream trip to Disneyworld in Florida.
That dream is one step closer as this week the family placed the deposit on the holiday, but there is still a great deal of fund-raising to be done and very little time to pay off the balance.
His father Norman explained the situation. He said: “We’re looking for businesses which might be able to sponsor us. The holiday to Disneyworld will cost £10,000 to take the whole family.
“We’ve made the deposit on the holiday, but now we need to pay the remaining balance in four weeks, which is around £8,650.
“The holiday is booked for December 11 to January 9.”
Due to the large sum still needed, the family is keen to speak to local businesses who might wish to help, having had little joy with the charitable programmes of national firms.
Norman said: “We’ve been in contact with some of the big companies, but they all have a six month turnaround for sponsorship, including Thomson Holidays, which is too late for us.
“We’re meeting with potential sponsors this week.”
Norman also hoped they might be able to appeal to the good nature of their travel agent and get an extension on when they need to pay off the balance.
He said: “We’re trying to get the manager to give us an extension on when we need to pay, perhaps another couple of weeks, but hopefully three or four. We’ll just have to wait and see what we can do.”
The family is organising a number of fund-raising nights. On Friday a pub crawl bucket collection in Arbroath raised £208.12 and the previous week organisers of the Sea Fest donated £100 to the fund.
Family members are holding a car wash at their home at 7 McGregors Walk, from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) and on Sunday, at £5 per car.
Then on Sunday night in the Black Abbot in Montrose a bingo evening has been scheduled from 7 to 9.30 p.m.
Two medium nights have also been organised, one in the Royal British Legion Scotland clubrooms on August 28 and the other in the Park Hotel, Montrose, on September 12.
