Daniel hoping for Christmas holiday

THE FAMILY of an Arbroath man who suffers from a debilitating condition that claimed the lives of his two younger brothers is hoping to give him a holiday he will never forget.

Daniel Mathieson (22) suffers from the muscle wasting disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy and has spent much of his life confined to a wheelchair.

He has had to go through the agony of losing his brother, 21-year-old John, last month, and in 2010 suffered the loss of James (17) his youngest brother.

One of Daniel’s wishes is to have a holiday at Disneyworld in Florida, and hopes he can make the trip at Christmas time.

And now his family, including parents Yvonne and Norman, have begun a fund-raising campaign to make Daniel’s dream holiday a reality.

Norman explained: “We are planning a few events so we can raise as much money as we can for him to go there.

“We are hoping to raise the money needed so he can visit at Christmas of this year.

“We just wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise.”

The first fund-raiser has been arranged by Daniel’s cousin Carla Beattie with her friend Jade Riddock next month.

The pair are holding a sponsored wax-a-thon in the Golf Inn, Montrose, on Sunday, August 12, starting at 12 noon.

The idea is that anyone who wishes to give sponsorship can pay to have a wax strip applied - and removed!

They have to be over 18, but the day is a family event, with food, a raffle and other attractions.

Norman added: “This is the first time that Carla has arranged anything like this so we have been all giving her a hand.

“Daniel will also be there on the day too.

“It has been a tough time lately but all the family are doing OK and we are coping well.”
