On Saturday August 27,`20 riders took part in the Cairn o’ Mount challenge, cycling from Aboyne to the Army Reserve Centre in Arbroath.
The event, to raise money for the Horseback UK organisation whose headquarters are in Aboyne, was a great success. All the riders completed the 54-mile challenge safely in good, but windy, weather.
Ian Wren, fund-raising manager for HorseBack UK, said: “The cycle ride this year has raised in the region of £4000 for our work with sick and injured veterans. 212 Highland Battery played a big part in the event with eight of their members taking part, including BSM John Finn. They also provided marshals for the ride and a barbecue at the end for all who took part. In the evening family and friends joined 212 Battery for a great night of entertainment.
“This event could not happen without the help of some local businesses who have sponsored us. I would like to thank R S Joinery, Williams Roofing, D H Robertsons and Morrisons for their support. Medical cover was again provided by Scot Medical, who are great supporters of HorseBack UK.
“I would personally like to thank all those who sponsored the cyclists and donated raffle prizes.”
HorseBack UK is a charity set up to empower service personnel and veterans suffering from life-changing injuries and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and to aid them on their road to recovery. Using horsemanship and exposure to the natural environment, participants gain self-confidence and self-esteem amongst people who have experienced similar trauma.
Success has allowed HorseBack UK to widen its remit and the charity is now dedicated to serving the wider community and is actively engaged with a number of civilian organisations.
Ian continued: “We are always looking to raise money towards the upkeep of our 36 horses and we have a website and Facebook page where people can find out more about our work.
“I’m planning a big event for next September, where I’ll be cycling from Arbroath to London. I’m looking for at least 14 other riders to accompany me and anyone who is interested can contact me directly through firstname.lastname@example.org - I look forward to hearing from you!”
