A teenager accused of rape, who reportedly told prison chiefs he wants to live as a woman ahead of his trial for two alleged rapes, has been freed from prison.

Last month it emerged Aaron Herschell had asked to start gender reassignment procedures while he awaits trial for serious sex offences.

The 19-year-old was being held at HMP YOI Polmont prior to his trial next year.

He was remanded in custody earlier this year as a man - but is reported to have asked to be called Alexis and live as a woman.

But now he has been liberated from the Falkirk jail on bail to await trial.

Herschell appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court earlier this week - still under the name Aaron - for a bail review hearing before Sheriff Gregor Murray.

He was granted bail for the alleged offences, said to have been committed in the Angus area, ahead of High Court dates being fixed in the new year.

The reason for the bail review was not disclosed following the private hearing.
