Police in Arbroath are investigating reports of a sighting of a body of a male in the sea just off the town’s coast.

Around 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, officers received a report from a member of the public who believed they saw a body just north of Arbroath cliffs.

A full scale co-ordinated search the took place involving Police Scotland, the coastguard, RNLI lifeboat crew and a search and rescue helicopter but no person was located in the sea.

However, following a search of the foreshore where the sighting took place, officers recovered a distinctive blue/grey and white coloured Lee Cooper jacket and a pair of spectacles.

But it is unknown whether the recovered items are connected to this incident.

Nearby, officers also found a partially consumed  meal and drink, suggesting that the owner of the clothing may have recently visited a McDonalds restaurant.

Police Scotland, Tayside Division are continuing enquiries into the full set of circumstances and appeal to anyone who may have any information that would help.

They are asked to contact Police Scotland on telephone number 101.
