Angus MP Mike Weir has reacted to the news that the Ministry of Defence intends to sell off the airfield at RM Condor as part of its disposal of MOD assets.
The news of the planned disposal of the airfield at RM Condor was in the Ministry of Defence report ‘A Better Defence Estate’ published yesterday (Monday).
The move follows the decision in March by the MOD to disband 662 Volunteer Gliding Squadron which was based at RM Condor and provided glider training to cadets. That function has now been taken on by 661 VGS at Kirknewton.
An estimated disposal date of 2020 for RM Condor’s airfield was given by the MOD.
Mr Weir said: “It is clearly good news that, unlike other bases in Scotland, there is no plan at present to close the base.
“The proposal to sell off the airfield will, however, considerably reduce the size of the base and I will be seeking assurances from the Minister that this will not adversely affect the future use of the base and the ability to deploy units from it.
“I hope that should the sale proceed that the MOD will make every effort is made to ensure that it creates an economic benefit to Arbroath.”
