Arbroath could be set to have a community council once again after a successful petition by Lichties to Angus
Only six names were put forward during the extended nomination period for the recent community council elections, which ran through September into October. A minimum of 10 nominations were required to form the community council.
But in the time since, the Returning Officer has received a petition from more than 20 people, which means arrangements can again be made for the establishment of a community council for the Royal Burgh of Arbroath and District.
Communities convener, councillor Donald Morrison said: “I’m delighted that people in Arbroath have recognised the value of having a community council and have rallied to the cause.
“Two years without a community council is two years too long for a community to deny itself an important and valuable democratic voice in local decision making.
“A community council for Arbroath can only be of benefit and I, along with the other Arbroath councillors, look forward to working alongside them on local matters.”
Letters and nomination packs have been sent to all 36 of the petition signatories along with anyone who previously submitted a nomination paper.
Angus Council’s community engagement officer has also arranged an Information Day at Voluntary Action Angus, 32-34 Guthrie Port, Arbroath, Angus, DD11 1RN, throughout the day on December 3.
The event will give the opportunity for anyone interested in the work to find out more, as well as what being a community councillor entails.
Nomination forms will also be available, along with help to fill them out, if required.
Forms can also be obtained from the Returning Officer (Community Council Elections), Elections Office, Angus House, Orchardbank Business Park, Forfar, DD8 1AN, or downloaded from the elections page of our website.
Nomination papers must be submitted no later than 4pm on Monday, December 14.
If an election is contested, a Notice of Poll will be published on Tuesday, December 29, and voting will take place commencing on Friday, January 15, 2015. The result of the election will be declared after the close of poll.
