Kerry Swankie has pulled out another Christmas cracker this year for those in need of some extra cheer on Christmas Day.

Following on from a successful Christmas Kitchen in 2013, Kerry will be cooking a festive feast in the CAFE Project to ensure everyone in Arbroath has somewhere warm to spend the day.

“There are loads of people who might be feeling down or can’t afford it. So I thought it would be nice to put on this dinner. We can have music and a laugh and they don’t have to worry about the cost,” Kerry said.

In a selfless act of crimbo kindness Kerry and a host of volunteers are giving up their time to spend the day pulling together all the turkey trimmings.

“Last year we had more than 20 people who received a hot meal,” Kerry said. “We even managed to have enough to send them on their way with Christmas leftovers and shopping vouchers.”

To make the day a success Kerry counts on local people and businesses to help out with donations of food as well as all the trimmings.

“Everybody is incredibly generous,” she said. “Stuart Aitken at Morrisons has already put themselves forward to help, he just said ‘bring your list and we’ll see what we can do’.

“Peter Stirling has donated vegetables and a local catering company have offered us the use of their bain maries.”

Local firms are also on board with employees at Axon in Arbroath generously donating £100 from their raffle as a contribution to the Christmas Kitchen.

After a similar service stopped running, Kerry fancied trying it herself: “It is a difficult time of year for those on their own, I wanted to create an environment where people would feel welcome.”
