FRESH from holding a highly successful Scottish heat for the Skillbuild competition - in which Angus students were equally successful - the painting and decorating team at Angus College hosted another prestigious event.

The Dulux Apprentice of the Year contest attracted around 15 ambitious entrants, said painting lecturer George Brown, which meant participation by nine colleges, from Inverness to Ayrshire.

Since 1998, Angus College painting and decorating students have lifted no fewer than 63 medals, so home-team confidence was high, and although the top accolade went to a girl from South Lanarkshire College, Angus College apprentices were placed third and fourth..

Third place went to Carol Benvie, Kirriemuir, who works for Enterprise Group, and fourth was Grant McIntosh, Arbroath, an apprentice with Pert Bruce in Montrose.

The students were tested in a variety of skills, all demanding scrupulous attention to detail and scary levels of precision, from paperhanging in front of demanding judges to traditional brush skills and special decorative effects, under equal scrutiny.

In addition, some traditional finishes currently staging a bit of a comeback featured, such as rag-rolling and stencilling.
