AN ARBROATH company recently sponsored the wife of a Montrose man in a daring African adventure.
In April, Mechserv, part of the Axon Energy Products Group, sponsored Catherine Cobb for the legendary Marathon Des Sables.
Recognised as arguably the toughest footrace on earth, the 156-mile course sees contenders face everything the Sahara Desert can throw at them over six days.
This included sandstorms, blistered feet and temperatures of up to 54 degrees Celsius. To make things even more difficult, Catherine also half-carried a fellow competitor the last 10 miles of the race because he had injured his feet.
Catherine raised over £2,600 for Help for Heroes and Combat Stress, two charities close to her heart as her husband David currently serves with the RAF.
This total was in addition to the £3,500 Catherine had to raise just to take part in the race. She said: “If it wasn’t for Mechserv and their financial support then I may never have got the opportunity to participate in such a race and challenge myself beyond my imagination, so for that I thank them.
“I can say the 2011 Marathon Des Sables was an amazing experience and I can think about it with both positive and fond memories, however if you’d asked me whilst I was out there I would have answered differently!
“I can safely say it was the hardest thing I have ever done both physically and mentally but knowing I was doing it for not only one worthy charity but two made it all worth it.”
