AN ARBROATH teenager was last month presented with a coveted cadet sash.

Kirstie Cunningham (19), of 2422 Squadron ATC was awarded the Andrew Sash as the best female cadet in Scotland and Northern Ireland on September 7.

Kirstie is no stranger to awards and was also named as one of the Lord Lieutenant’s cadets, another highly regarded achievement.

When not instructing her fellow cadets in first aid or taking training courses such as the independent parachute and solo flying qualifications which she passed, Kirstie can be found working as a carer at Tarriebank Nursing Home.

She is also a keen sportswoman, and coaches Hayshead Primary netball squad as well as playing at Wing and Regional level for RAF Cosford.

As a youth leader at the Old and Abbey Church, Kirstie was part of a humanitarian mission to build homes for orphans of AIDS and HIV in Durban, South Africa. She hopes that one day she will become an officer in the RAF Volunteer Reserve, a long way from the young probationary cadet she was in 2005!
