An Arbroath councillor says he, too, was surprised an option in an online questionnaire related to a possible closure of the Webster Theatre.
Last week the Herald reported that in an online survey on Angus Council cuts, opinion was being gauged on an option to reduce funding for the town’s theatre.
This prompted many readers to get in touch saying they too are shocked that it is being considered as an option.
And Councillor Ewan Smith echoed their opinion.
He said: “I too am concerned about this although I don’t believe there is any immediate threat to the theatre.
“It is an integral part of the town and we have so many talented production companies here such as the Limelight, who are doing wonders for children of all ages and the Angus Minstrels.
“So I was very very surprised when I did the budget exercise myself to find it was a potential option.
“But if there were plans to close the theatre I would very strongly oppose them.”
Councillor Smith also believes the theatre is a real town asset and hopes it will stay that way for years to come.
He added: “You can’t say it is under-used as many local groups and other productions use it.
“You see people of all age groups from people in their 90s right down to young children enjoying shows there.
“The town absolutely needs its theatre.”
