ANGUS MP Mike Weir has welcomed the announcement by the Scottish government of a new £35 million prototype fund and £7 million wave technology investment at the Scottish Low Carbon Investment Conference.
Mr Weir also welcomed the publication of the new Offshore Wind guide which showed the benefits of the oil and gas sector working with offshore wind development.
He commented: “Offshore wind development in particular could provide an important economic boost to Angus and it is vital that we fully engage with the development of this new technology.
“The new guide indicates that Scotland’s oil and gas sector, which already forms an important part of our local economy, could help reduce offshore wind costs by at least 20% per cent.
“This clearly demonstrates the importance of these industries working together and the prospect of transferring local skills directly from the oil and gas industry to the new offshore renewable industry.”
Mr Weir also welcomed the support of the Westminster Energy and Climate Change Select Committee for the proposal of a North Sea super grid.
He stated: “This is an idea that I have long supported. Scotland has immense potential in offshore renewables and the super grid would ensure that we were able to develop overseas markets and co operate with other energy producers.
“This would significantly increase the energy security of the whole of northern Europe.”
