Council presents proposals for the future

Angus Council has published its Proposed Local Development Plan outlining opportunities for our area over the next decade.

The plan sets out the development strategy, policies for the use of land and sites proposed for development in Angus for the period 2016 - 2026. The environmental report identified, described and evaluated the likely significant effect on the environment of implementing the proposed Angus local development plan.

It can be viewed online at or at Angus Council ACCESS offices or libraries.

For each of the towns in our area the key factors seem to be the development or redevelopment of existing brownfield and vacant sites and the identification of more housing opportunities.

Lists are available online of all the areas which Angus Council have identified for further development, in Arbroath one of the most significant is at Crudie Acres and Crudie Farm, Arbirlot, which could accommodate up to 350 new homes. Other sites identified for possible housing, industrial or tourism development include The Elms, the former Bleachworks at Wardmill Road, the Helen Street goods yard and the former Seaforth Hotel site among others. A need for further industrial capacity at the Elliot Industrial Estate was also identified in the Local Plan.

According to the plan: “The challenge for the Local Development Plan will be how to continue the regeneration of Arbroath and enhance new opportunities for jobs, investment and tourism by allocating and promoting appropriate sites for development.

Similarly in Carnoustie redevelopment was at the top of the agenda, with opportunities identified at Woodside/Pitskelly, Barry Road, Greenlaw Hill and the former Maltings, including potential for further industrial units released at Carlogie and Pitskelly, and phased release of greenfield land at Pitskelly proposed for housing development.

The future of golf and its importance to the town’s economic health was singled out: “Encouraging new development and investment where this will strengthen the role of the town centre and enhance its vibrancy, vitality and viability whilst improving the quality of the physical environment; and protecting and enhancing Carnoustie’s internationally recognised golfing facilities, where appropriate, and further developing tourism, recreation facilities and accommodation.”

In Monifieth housing and infrastructure were the main issues, with the potential housing developments at Ashludie and Victoria.
