Arbroath Relay For Life organisers are inviting men, women and children touched by cancer to play a key role in this year’s event.

Survivors and others currently undergoing treatment are being asked to join the emotional and inspirational ‘Lap of Honour’ which marks the start of the overnight fundraising festival in support of Cancer Research UK.

The Relay For Life is a unique celebration of life and hope and a family event which unites communities to help beat over 200 types of cancer.

Ian Angus, volunteer chair of the Arbroath Relay, said: “The Survivors’ Lap of Honour is a crucial part of Relay For Life. It is an extremely moving start to the weekend’s festivities as people of all ages, wearing special purple T-shirts, step on to the track cheered on by all present. The Survivor’s Lap inspires our wonderful fundraisers. It allows us to honour everyone who has experienced cancer and to celebrate the advances, through research, that are being made to beat the disease.

“Although we would encourage survivors to take part in the lap of honour, we do understand that there are some people who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to do so. Anyone in that position is still very welcome to come along as a guest of honour to the survivors’ reception where they can sit in a relaxed atmosphere with others who have been through treatment for cancer and enjoy lunch and light refreshments.”

Survivor registration is free, and advance registration is encouraged to ensure all necessary arrangements are made. For details on the Arbroath Relay For Life on the weekend of September 19 and 20, contact Relay Chair, Ian Angus on 07928521030 or Team Chair John Crompton onbigjc17@hotmail.com
