Book your place for Commando Kids

COMMANDO Kids, a Commando-themed fund-raising fun day, takes place on Sunday (June 24) at Monikie Country Park and there are still places left!

The event has been organised by Commando 999, a group of former Royal Marine Commandos who are now serving in the emergency services. This includes firefighters, paramedics, mountain rescue and police officers.

Applications will be accepted from individuals or teams. Anyone aged between nine and 16 years can take part. Download an entry form for your mini-Marines and obtain full details at

The start time for those who have already applied is 9 a.m., and for those applying now the start time is 11 a.m. All those taking part must attend a briefing at the base camp marquee 15 minutes before their start time. On completion of the event there will be a presentation of a completion certificate by a special guest.

Commando Kids is a Royal Marine Commando-themed day of activity and adventure. Your mini-marines team of four will be put through their commando training by a team of Royal Marines.

There will also be plenty of other events going on during the day for non-competitors or those too young or too old to participate including choirs, bands and bouncy castles, as well as a barbecue. All proceeds go to the Royal Marines Association

The event involves a Commando-style challenge for teams of youths to participate and compete in. Teams will be split into age groups, with four people per team. The teams will then take part in five challenges, gaining points for each. The challenge will last for two hours and will run for different age groups throughout the day, followed by prize-giving.

The challenges are:

Commando PT – Test your fitness in an exercise session with a difference: a speed march, log run, fireman carry and obstacle-course race as a team. Just like the Royal Marines do in training.

Commando assault – Learn how the Royal Marines work as a team: capture the flag from an enemy team using laser shot weapons.

Commando climb – Do you have the heart of a Commando? Test your courage, climb to the top of the tower and abseil back to the ground.

Commando canoe – Commandos are water-based specialists and you can be too. In this piece of amphibious action you will cross the lake between two objectives in an open canoe.

Commando observation post – A real Commando needs to know what’s happening. How many of the target objects can you spot from the observation post?

Every team will receive a completion certificate, T-shirt and C999 wrist band.

In order to participate in the challenge each team has to raise some sponsorship money. To book a team place, a deposit of £40 (or £10 per person) will be required to cover costs. This can be paid on the day.

Commando 999 was founded in 2009 by Mark Scoular and aims to raise over £1 million for The Royal Marines Association by 2014. Every penny raised for The Royal Marines Association goes directly towards caring for the entire Corps family from cradle to grave. This involves providing support for both injured servicemen and women and their immediate families.

Organisers have teamed up with Just Giving who take care of all online donations. Your team can create their own page here and raise money towards the target of £1 million.
