AN INVESTIGATION has been launched by British Transport Police after the discovery of a body beside the main Dundee - Aberdeen railway line early on Saturday morning.

Officers were called to the area adjacent to Arbroath Artisan Golf Club on the outskirts of the town at about 6.40 a.m. after a train driver had reported seeing the body of a man at the side of the track.

It is believed that he may have been struck by an earlier train.

The driver who saw the body was travelling south from Aberdeen.

Officers of British Transport Police undertook a search of the track and closed the line while this was in progress.

The victim was later identified as a 40-year-old local man.

A total of seven trains were cancelled between Aberdeen and Dundee while the line was closed, 18 were part cancelled and a further 21 were delayed.
