AN ARBROATH club will have a celebrity trainer next weekend in the shape of a former boxing champion.
Former middleweight and super middleweight World Boxing Champion Nigel Benn will take part in a training session at British Military Martial Arts on Lindsay Street on August 25.
Jason Aston runs the Arbroath branch of the fitness firm. He said: “Well, what it is, I run a couple of schools of British Military Martial Arts and Nigel Benn is actually the ambassador for us.
“He’s ex-military himself. British Military Martial Arts is set up to be run by ex-military instructors to give them a career path when they come out of the military.
“He’s going to do a one hour seminar, there’s going to be a lot of different martial artists there and he’s going to train with them for half an hour.
“He’s basically running a boxing seminar with the guys. We are hoping it brings a bit of much needed publicity to the town, especially with all the things closing down at the moment.”
Benn has come out of retirement in Menorca to tour the various BMMA groups in Britain, in this short 24 hour trip he will visit all three Scottish BMMA branches in Angus, Edinburgh and Glasgow and run seminars with their members to raise awareness of the work the group does with ex-service personnel.
Asked if 48-year-old Benn would be up to the challenge, Jason laughed: “Definitely. We are talking about a guy who has been a double world champion.
“To be a double world champion in the 80s you would have to be a great fighter. It was the golden age of boxing.”
There are a few tickets left at £39 for the seminar but they are selling rapidly. To buy one call Jason Aston on 07913695790.
