Best Bar None ‘Fantastic Fifth’ awards launched

THE LAUNCH of this year’s ‘Fantastic Fifth’ Best Bar None Angus Awards took place at Sharkys Bar, Montrose, on Thursday.

A record number of licensed premises in the county have applied to participate in this national award scheme which is unique to the licensed trade.

Best Bar None Angus rewards and recognises safe and well-managed licensed premises and awards are made following assessment of the ways in which pubs, clubs and bars deal with prevention of crime and disorder, promote public safety, prevent public nuisance and protect children from harm.

The initiative is a partnership involving Angus Council, Tayside Police, NHS Tayside and Tayside Fire and Rescue.

Divisional Commander for Policing in Angus, Chief Superintendent Colin McKay, stated: “Alcohol misuse can often lead to a number of issues within our community.

“I am delighted at the response from licensees within the Angus area, not only in supporting the principles of Best Bar None, but also recognising the many advantages of participating in the award scheme.

“Best Bar None Angus is about raising standards within the licensed trade and this shows great commitment by those publicans who have entered, demonstrating their will to make Angus a safer place for our residents and visitors alike.”

Eileen McArthur of Focus on Alcohol Angus commented: “Last year’s Best Bar None Awards successfully accredited 29 premises in Angus, and the scheme is now increasingly well recognised by the public.

“Earlier this year Angus put forward three national finalists into the new Scottish Best Bar None Scotland Awards 2011.”

She went on: “There are a number of benefits for both the local community and the licensed trade. Angus Licensing Board also supports Best Bar None, as this initiative reduces crime and identifies venues which members of the public can visit, knowing that stringent standards are in place. This all makes for a safer night out in Angus.”

Tayside Police and their partners involved with Focus on Alcohol Angus are advising that there are very few places left for this year’s Best Bar None Awards, so premises which wish to be considered should submit applications by May 31.
