THE ANNUAL Bell Rock Blues Festival takes place this weekend as part of the Year of the Light celebration programme.
For the first time the festival will start on the Friday evening (tonight) when nine bands will perform in various venues throughout the town. The festival reaches a crescendo tomorrow (Saturday) and on Sunday when there will be some 40 performances involving 22 different bands.
Organiser Sandra Nicoll, The Pageant, said: “All in all it will be a terrific weekend of music as we have introduced an element of different styles to suit everyone. It is a true family event because children are welcome in suitably licensed premises.
“There will be 33 different bands playing, some of them old favourites and some new faces to the festival. We have some local bands and also some who will have travelled a fair distance but unfortunately we were unable to accept bands from overseas because of the high costs involved.
“We had hundreds of applications and many from overseas but the only way we could have covered the cost of bringing in overseas bands would be to make an entry charge and the organisers were adamant that the event should remain free entry. We are grateful to the advertisers and to the sponsorship we have received from Diageo and Angus Council which has gone a little way towards advertising. All other costs are paid for by the venues.”
Full details of all the bands can be seen at http://www.bellrockblues.com
Programmes are available from all the venues and there will also be an opportunity to support the festival by purchasing a T-shirt. Sandra commented: “Any profits from this will go towards next year’s festival because obtaining sponsorship is getting more and more difficult.”
The atmosphere in the venues is terrific - what better way could there be to spend a weekend?
