A former Tayside Musketeer captain and Arbroath basketball star has secured a scholarship in the United States.

Nicky Sim (19), pictured above in action, has been honing his skills while studying at Highland High School in Virginia.

He applied for further education at Elmira College in New York State and was recently accepted.

He said: “I am really excited. It is going to be tough getting back into academic classes but there are opportunities to swap subjects.

“During the basketball season training is every day.”

After already spending 10 months away from Arbroath, Nicky is not worried about being homesick and is raring to start come September.

He has been playing basketball since he was 12 and will also be representing Scotland this year playing for the senior team.

Mother Lynda is understandably proud of her son’s achievements despite the distance: “He was away for 10 months and we went to collect him last June. It is quite a daunting prospect for him but we are very proud.”
