The Arbroath Relay For Life committee is looking forward to strengthening a global partnership with their counterparts Down Under.

The dates have been set for both the Illiwarra and Frankston relays as September 19 and 20 and the Arbroath team are looking forward to another international link up.

Arbroath Relay For Life chair Ian Angus said: “With all three relays again taking place over the same weekend in September, the opportunity is there for us to use our links to once again demonstrate the global nature of Relay For Life and the world-wide nature of our goal of beating cancer.

“In the coming weeks, we will be communicating with our friends in Frankston and Illiwarra to discuss ways in which we can build on last year’s link-up and strengthen ties between our communities in line with our common goal of raising as much money as we can for cancer research.”

In May 1985, Dr Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the USA’s biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined Gordy for the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.

“With that global reach, Relay For Life is like no other fund-raising event;” Ian continued. “Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there for the entire time. But it’s so much fun, people find it hard to leave and once you have taken part in one Relay, you just can’t wait for the next one!

“Survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years and our scientists are confident that, with the continuing support of our fund-raisers, survival rates can be increased to 3 in 4 over the next 20 years.

“The progress we’ve made in cancer detection and treatment is due to the effort and sheer determination of people who believed they could make a real difference – we need more people with that passion to join the fight.”
