AN ANGUS charity has benefited from the generosity and hard work of a group from RAF Leuchars.

The Angus 4 Forces Charity received a cheque for £800 from a six-man team from the Logistics Squadron at RAF Leuchars which took part in the RAF’s Tactical Support Wing Bergathon.

The annual event takes place at the Swynerton Training Area, Staffordshire, and sees military and civilian teams cover three 10 kilometre circuits in three-man relays while carrying over 40lbs of kit.

The name Bergathon comes from the bergan packs each person carries, which weigh at least 32lbs. In addition to the bergan is a nine pound assault rifle for target shooting, with misses adding penalty points to course times.

Angus 4 Forces was chosen as the beneficiary after Sergeant Chris Jarret met the group’s chairman Chic Grant on a visit home to Arbroath.

Sergeant Jarrett said: “To train for the Bergathon, myself and a few other willing volunteers took to the countryside in the surrounding area of RAF Leuchars to pound out the miles while increasing both the weight and the miles week by week.

“During one of the runs I explained what the Angus 4 Forces Charity Ball does and the result was unanimous that we would fund-raise for them.”

Angus 4 Forces chair Chic Grant said: “We’re very grateful that Chris and his team thought of us, it was much appreciated and it went to a good cause.

“It was a phenomenal effort.”

The next Angus 4 Forces charity ball has been scheduled for October 26 and more details will be made available shortly.

Last year the Angus 4 Forces held a charity ball which raised thousands of pounds for Combat Stress, Scottish Veterans’ Residences, Commando999 and the SSAFA Forces Help.
