The Abbeygate Shopping Centre in Arbroath was evacuated at lunchtime today (Wednesday) when a fire alarm sounded.

Initially the alarm in the Edinburgh Woollen Mill went off at about 1.10pm. Staff immediately asked customers to leave.

About five minutes later the general alarm in the mall went off and those present made their fairly leisurely way out. There was no smell of smoke nor sign of fire.

Within three minutes a fire engine had arrived and firefighters checked the premises. Within 10 minutes the alarm was switched off, firefighters made their way back to their machine, and customers were allowed to return.
