On a cold autumn Saturday evening, my partner and I headed to the Links Hotel in Montrose for a meal for two.

We were seated into the comfortable bar lounge where our drinks and food order was taken. Once our starters were ready, we were taken to the cosy conservatory and seated by a warm radiator to keep us toasty.

To start I had the beautifully presented half-melon with a scoop of refreshing and fruity blackcurrant sorbet inside. My partner had the chef’s homemade pate which came with oatcakes and chutney. He said the texture was nice and smooth, but it was a little under seasoned.

I went for the Lunan Bay seafood salad for my main. It came with a large slice of gorgeous smoked salmon, a homemade seafood cake, which was light and not greasy like some fish cakes, prawns in a creamy sauce, and a flavoursome Arbroath smokie mousse. I really liked the zingy pesto which accompanied the dish. Although it was delicious and I enjoyed it, I think my definition of salad is different to the Links’. There were a few salad leaves on the side, but I would’ve liked more.

My partner had the rib eye steak with blue cheese sauce. He said it was tender and grilled perfectly, and the sauce had a lovely subtle cheese flavour that didn’t overpower the meat. But he wasn’t given a steak knife which made it harder to cut the meat. It came with delicious caramelised onions, mushrooms and a tomato and a portion of chips

The best bit of the meal was dessert. I went for tiramisu served with Bailey’s crème anglaise and chocolate ice cream. They must have known I was coming, as I love Bailey’s and chocolate together. And it did not disappoint - the tiramisu was light and airy and drizzled with the crème anglaise, it was the perfect end to the meal. Again, the presentation was impeccable.

My partner chose the chef’s homemade fruit crumble. He had to wait 20 minutes for it to be cooked, but it was worth the wait - big pieces of juicy fruit including blackberries, apple and pears, with a crunchy crumb on top.

If you’re looking for somewhere classy to go for a special occasion or just to treat yourself, then the Links Hotel is the perfect place. You get a good portion of delicious food and leave the hotel feeling satisfied not stuffed.
