A ‘Dog Day Afternoon’ in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower in the background.
The three friends, Stewart Burnett, Craig Smith and Alistair Stewart, got behind the wheel on Sunday for the first leg of the ‘Rust 2 Rome’ charity challenge.
It will see them drive 4000 miles across Europe
and back in aid of Help For
The ‘banger rally’ set off from Edinburgh and over 10 days they will reach the Coliseum in Rome and then come home again.
The main rule for the challenge is to buy a car for less than £500.
After a great deal of trawling, the perfect vehicle was found online for just £300 and, of course, it was felt necessary to make it just a little bit different!
Stewart explained: “Our car is a 1995 Volvo 850 with 240,000 miles on the clock ,and what is perhaps even more unusual is the fact that it resembles a dog.
‘‘To be more exact, it looks like the ‘Dog’ which appears in the ‘Dumb and Dumber’ series of films.
“The body work is completely covered in carpet and has some unusual extras such as a tail, nose, tongue and flapping ears!
“We have scoured scrap yards to salvage parts to make the Dog ready for the 4000-mile round trip which lies ahead.
“The ‘Dog’ has been turning a few heads as we have driven through Arbroath and other parts of Angus in recent weeks.
“I feel many people would like to know what it is all about and hopefully, in the process, we can raise further funds for Help for Heroes.”
Their employer, GE Oil and Gas, have also promised to match the total.
At the time of going to press they had smashed their Justgiving target of £1000 , raising more than £1200 for Help For Heroes.
