LICENSED premises in Angus are being thanked for their support in publicising the new rules banning the drinking of alcohol in public places in Arbroath and Kirriemuir.
Posters are being distributed in both burghs advertising the new ban, and outlining the penalty for those caught flouting the new bye laws.

Councillor Jim Millar, convener of Angus Licensing Board, commented: "With the introduction of the recent
local bye laws banning the drinking of alcohol in public in designated areas in the town centres of Arbroath and Kirriemuir, there has been a positive response from local publicans and licensed grocers in both areas to the posters.

"The posters, which are being distributed by Angus Council and are endorsed by Tayside Police and the Angus Drug and Alcohol Action Team, are a reminder that drinking outside could attract a fine of up to £500.

"Public drinking is often a nuisance and can greatly hamper the quality of life for residents in a particular area. By introducing this new law, we aim to make our towns safer and more pleasant for residents and visitors."

Councillor Millar also reminded local people that under the bye law, it is not necessary for a person to be seen drinking - anyone who has alcohol in open bottles or containers in their possession is guilty of an offence.
