POLICE WARNING AFTER HANDBAG THEFT

ARBROATH Police are advising people to take extra care of their personal property following the theft of a handbag in Arbroath at the weekend.
A lady's handbag was stolen from within the Central Bar, Brothock Bridge, sometime between 11 p.m. on Saturday (August 23) and 12.30 a.m. on Sunday after she had briefly left it unattended.
It is a black plastic handbag and contained, make-up and a purse which in turn had credit and debit cards and a small sum of cash in it.
Officers are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have information that could assist enquiries to contact 0845 600 56705, or speak to any officer.
Losing personal property such as a bag can be problematic, as it is the loss of the contents that can cause anxiety and inconvenience to the owner.
Derek Mitchell, crime reduction officer at Forfar, said: "Never lose sight of your handbag or possessions. Unfortunately, if you do not keep a close eye on your own property and leave it unattended there can often be somebody waiting nearby who is more than willing to look after it for you.
"Please do not show what cash you have unnecessarily, or show off your latest purchases such as mobile phones or MP3 players. Such behaviour can make you a target for opportunistic criminals.
"Losing your keys, mobile telephone, credit cards, passports and driving license will require you to take immediate steps to tackle the problem. For example, changing locks, cancelling cards and phone service provider."
"Only take the cash, credit or debit cards that you need with you and never write down the pin number and keep it with your cards. When you are out and about with your friends keep an eye out for each other's property and remember it only takes a few seconds for a thief to act. Don't make it easy for them!''
If you have any information in relation to this or any other incident which you think may be useful to the police, you can contact Tayside Police on 0845 600 5705 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
