THE RELIEF was palpable as Arbroath's players and fans celebrated in unison at the climax of the play-off final at Stair Park on Saturday.

Arbroath gained promotion to the Second Division despite losing on the day to Stranraer. In the end the Lichties' deserved two-goal lead from the first leg proved to be too much for The Blues to overcome.

Stranraer put up a decent fight and gave a Arbroath a torrid time throughout the game. The final 30 minutes were especially nerve-racking after Maroon defender, Craig Tully, was shown a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Daniel Mitchell.

And with 25 minutes left, Gregory Tade burst in to the box and fired a shot past Darren Hill to bring his side back in to the tie.

However, despite buffeting the Arbroath goal in the final stages - a period that Gayfield gaffer John McGlashan would later describe as the worst in his career - the home side were unable to force extra time.

As the final whistle rang out the hundreds of travelling supporters who had made the long journey south joined their heroes on the pitch as the celebrations, which continued long into the night back in Arbroath, began in earnest.
