A WELL-INTENTIONED false alarm on Sunday led to both Arbroath lifeboats searching Lunan Bay for a powerboat which it was thought had capsized.
At the time, competitors in the Round Britain Offshore Powerboat Race were in the vicinity.
A driver on the Arbroath Montrose road saw what appeared to be a boat disappearing after it hit a big wave. Both the RNLB Inchcape and the inshore boat Duncan Ferguson spent two hours in the area but made no discovery.

A spokesman for the Coastguard service explained: "There was a suspected vessel in distress. A gentleman on the A92 looked across at Lunan Bay and he said he saw one of the powerboats disappear in a big wave.

"None were reported missing by the organisers, and what we think happened is that one of the boats stalled and threw up a big spray which prevented the man seeing anything afterwards."
