THE ODIN nightclub at the corner of Catherine Street and West Port (formerly the Waverley Hotel), was a hot potato on the agenda of Tuesday's meeting of the Angus Licensing Board.
The Odin is owned by Majestic (Montrose) Ltd., and had been the source in the past of considerable problems regarding alcohol-related nuisances and offences in the area. It has been closed for some two years.

Majestic applied to re-open it but thi
s attracted a number of objections. In August the Board asked for a meeting involving them, objectors and police to discuss these problems and how they could be avoided in the future.

The matter was deferred until Wednesday for this to take place.

But the meeting has not happened, and because of the delay a temporary licence has been deemed to have been granted. However, the Board could reconsider it once the discussions had taken place.

The clerk, Sheona Hunter, told the Board: "The solicitors acting for the licensee have indicated ... that the licensee does not propose to re-open the premises meantime."

Rather, they intend to market the premises at some time in the future.

Members of the Board agreed that their clerk should write to Majestic's lawyers, telling them that unless they voluntarily surrender the licence, the Board will require to reconsider the application which was deferred from August 26 last year.
