AN ARBROATH woman has recently retired after 23 years behind the counter at Silverwells Garden Centre.
June Steven began on a part-time basis to assist the company's owners set up office. However, she quickly went on to join full-time working the till.

It is a role she is already missing immensely, Mrs Stephen told us: "Over the years I worked there I really enjoyed all the relationships I made with the customers plus the great banter between staff. Overall, I just loved working there and I would go back in an instant."

Over the years Mrs Stephen has became well known in the town due to her involvement with a number of local groups. She set up the Girls' Nautical Training Corps and held the role of commanding officer. Mrs Stephen was also a captain in the Girls' Life Brigade at the Old Church, secretary of the Arbroath and District Youth Panel, which used to organise the yearly Commonwealth Youth Parade in the town, an admin and first aid officer with the Sea Cadets as well as a member of the St Andrews Ambulance Association.

And she remembers fondly being 13 years of age and appointed head monitor of the ABC minors who used to meet weekly at the Palace cinema.

After leaving school Mrs Stephen worked in the offices of architects Johnstone & Baxter before moving on the repairs pricing department at Fairweathers' shoe factory. She moved on to Leatherfloor working as the managing director's secretary before a spell as a directors' secretary at Shanks.

Mrs Stephen and her husband, Bob, have five daughters. The extended family now includes five grandsons and four granddaughters.
