THOMAS and Dorothy Beattie, 11 Garry Nicoll Gardens, celebrate their golden wedding anniversary tomorrow (Saturday).
They were married on October 4, 1958 at Inverbrothock Church by the Rev. R.S. Bishop. The couple met one Sunday after visiting 'the pictures', and they were introduced on a 'friend of a friend' basis.

Mrs Beattie, nee Lawson, has lived in Arbroath from the age of 10 months, and attended Inverbrothock Primary School and Arbroath High School.

When she left school she became a junior in the office of solicitor Wilfred Forrester, and then worked for Angus Hospitals Board of Management until she was married. In her later years she worked for Halliburton's in Arbroath.

Her hobbies over the years have included latch hook rug-making, reading, puzzle books and gardening.

Mr Beattie's family was involved in the fish trade, and when he left school at the age of 14 he took on a fish round in Blairgowrie. This involved a train from Arbroath to Forfar, another to Coupar Angus, and a bus to Blairgowrie. He carried his wares in old creels, transported on a two-wheeled barrow, and did this four times a week.

When he was old enough to drive he bought a van and established a round in Perthshire. He was in this business for 25 years.
Change comes, and in this case Mr Beattie obtained employment first with Esk Foods, Montrose, and then for 19 years with Halliburton's. He was made redundant, but was taken back, and then made redundant again!
His last job before retiring was with Gray Homes, as a watchman.

His hobbies have included gardening and watching TV.

The couple have three children: David, in Arbroath; Douglas in Leven; and Mrs Brenda Duncan, Auchmithie. There are eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Asked for the secret of their long and happy life together, the two answers were fairly compatible. Mrs Beattie said: "We mainly agree about everything," while her husband added: "I dae whit I'm telt."

A family party has already been held at the Cliffburn Hotel.
