AN ARBROATH student was the last person to pay a toll on the Tay road bridge on Sunday night. Tolls were lifted a midnight following a decision by the Scottish Government to abolish payments on both the Tay and Forth bridges in line with their manifesto promise.
Ashley McGregor (19), Parkview Gardens, was heading for Fife to visit her boyfriend, Adam Muirhead, after having just completed a shift at Marco's fish and chip shop.

The Duncan of Jordanstone College student told the Arbroath Herald: "I was really excited to be the last person to pay a toll."

A former pupil of Ladyloan Primary School and Arbroath High School, Ashley is in the second year of a textiles course at the Dundee college.

She was presented with an illustrated book, entitled The Tay Road Bridge, to mark the occasion.

Bridge manager John Crerar, handed over copies of the publication, printed when the bridge opened in 1966 and featuring details of its construction, to the last toll-paying customer and the first customer to cross toll-free. Each book also contained a special dedication.
