AN ARBROATH Pippin or Oslin apple tree has been planted in the orchard of the HOPE garden at Hospitalfield House.
The planting ceremony was conducted by Angus MP Mike Weir.
The apple is believed to have been developed by the monks at Arbroath Abbey beginning a traditional of apple development in the area that lasted until at least the late 19th century.
HOPE had tracked down a supplier of organic trees and has added two to their expanding orchard.
Mr Weir, himself an organic gardener, said he has long had an interest in old varieties of apples, many of which are far removed from the uniform varieties on offer in modern supermarkets.
He continued: "The monks at Arbroath Abbey were part of a long tradition of apple development in Angus and Perthshire. They had extensive orchards, the presence of which is remembered in some of the street names in the town.
"Apple development continued with, for example, the Seaton House being developed in the mid 19th century at, as its name suggests, Seaton House."
He stated: "I was very pleased to be invited to plant the tree and help re-establish this old variety in Arbroath. I hope many other gardeners will seek out such varieties and ensure that they continue to thrive."
