'THE VERY definition of summer'
That's how an author in the latest Lonely Planet magazine has described eating Smokies at Arbroath harbour.

In the June issue, Lonely Planet magazine focuses on 15 places in the UK which provide the perfect location for a summer escape, with Angus number six on the list.

And, according to the article, Arbroath and its surrounding area is one of the best areas in the county to visit.

The article - which is entitled 'Hot Britain' - features 15 locations handpicked by authors of the highly-respected Lonely Planet guidebooks.

On hearing of the recommendation about eating Smokies at the harbour, Alex Spink of local fish merchants, Alex Spink and Sons, said: "What a great advert for Arbroath Smokies and for Arbroath."

As well as sampling these famous local delicacies, the article suggests going on a sea angling trip, walking along the cliffs to Auchmithie and relaxing at Lunan Bay.

In addition, two local establishments receive a special mention: The But 'n' Ben at Auchmithie ('A local favourite for its seafood') and Harbour Nights ('The finest place to wake up in town').

"Receiving such an accolade from Lonely Planet magazine is fantastic," said Bill Adam of Harbour Nights. "Anything that brings Arbroath and Angus to the forefront is good news for everyone in this area.

"We know from personal experience that Lonely Planet recommendations are highly effective. We get a lot of business through people who have read about Harbour Nights in Lonely Planet guidebooks, especially French and German visitors, who have told us that Lonely Planet rates Harbour Nights as one of the best places to stay in Scotland."

Margo Horne from the But 'n' Ben was equally delighted with the article. "Angus has so much to offer but is so often overlooked, " said Margo, who spotted the feature when she was flicking through the pages of her own copy of Lonely Planet magazine.

"It's fantastic for this area – and the But 'n' Ben - to receive recognition from such a prestigious publication."
