ALEXANDER Ramsay celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday at Clyde Court - and among the well-wishers was his big brother, Jim, aged 102.
The birthday boy was one of the founder members of Arbroath Male Voice Choir, from 1934, and a detachment of the choir sang 'Happy Birthday' - including its oldest member, Jim. Mr Ramsay, jnr., was made an honorary president in 2004, and is the only
living founder member.

Mr Ramsay was born in Avonbridge, Stirling, and brought up in Stewarton, where his father moved in his capacity as a congregational minister.

He studied pharmacy in Edinburgh and in 1933 he was appointed manager of Boots the Chemist in High Street. He stayed with the Arbroath branch until he retired.

Pictured at the celebration are, from left - Lady Fraser, Alex, the Provost and brother Jim.

He was for many years an enthusiastic golfer, and a member of Arbroath Golf Club.

His interests have included photography, and his family have a huge collection of his work, dating back 80-odd years. In his younger days he was a wizard of the Scrabble board.

He and his late wife, Nettie (Janet), had two children, Alaistair and Sandra, and there are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Among the special guests at the celebration were Lady Fraser, in her capacity as a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the County of Angus, and the Provost of Angus, Ruth Leslie Melville, who brought congratulations from Her Majesty The Queen.

Mr Ramsay's son, Alaistair, wonders if his father and uncle are the oldest living brothers in Scotland?
