View from the top

This week’s photograph from the archives gives us a unique view from the top of the Bell Rock lighthouse, something not many of us will have had the good fortune to have seen.

From what we can discern from the scan-accompanying information this picture may have been taken in 1987.

It appears to show repair work being carried out on the helipad, top left. which was initially installed in the 1970s.

According to sources the helipad and walkway may be in need of further repairs.

The flags may be a reference to the 180 years since work began on the Bell Rock in 1807.

The lighthouse underwent automation works in the 1990s.
