Fiddle festival

ANGUS Strathspey and Reel Society will hold its popular annual fiddle festival tomorrow (Saturday) in St Andrew’s Parish Church, Kirriemuir.

The festival, which has been running for 45 years, encompasses a day of fiddle competitions and attracts entrants from across the country. The day offers an opportunity to hear a very high standard of playing, particularly in the championship competition which is held during the evening concert along with the quartet and orchestra competitions.

The concert will also features all the competition winners so it is a great chance to hear some of the best young fiddlers in Scotland. Entries are still being accepted for Junior classes - slow air and reel, Junior march and strathspey and reel; senior classes - composers (reel), slow air, hornpipe, march and strathspey and reel, championship, quartet, orchestra. The event will be open to the public from 11 a.m., tickets for which will be available at the door, while the concert will start at 7 p.m. The society is also looking for new players to attend its weekly meetings in St Andrew’s Church hall on Mondays from 7.30 to 9 p.m.
