Young musicians in Scottish championships

ARBROATH Instrumental Youth Band, conducted by Ann Ness, will travel to Perth Concert Hall tomorrow (Saturday) to take part in the Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships.

The average age of the band is only 13 years with the youngest member being only 10. In previous years the band has been made up of older personnel but two years ago a decision was made to lower the membership age so many of the band today are primary six and seven youngsters.

It is now more of a development and training band, with players feeding into both the Arbroath Instrumental Band and the current British Youth Band Champions Carnoustie and District Youth Brass Band.

All players have been practising hard and will hope to perform as well as they have done in previous years. Performances are open to the public and tickets can be purchased at the Concert Hall if you wish to come along and support the youngsters.

As Arbroath Instrumental Band approaches the end of another successful year, thoughts turn to the final performances of 2012.

Ann Ness stated: “We look forward to our Christmas Concert which will be held in St. Anne’s Church, Carnoustie, on Saturday, December 8, at 7.30 p.m.

“The band will play a selection of seasonal favourites and the concert will be followed by tea, coffee and mince pies.”

Tickets are £5 and will be available at the door. The band will also accompany Arbroath Male Voice Choir at their annual Christmas Concert in St Andrew’s Church, Arbroath, on Sunday, December 16.

The conductor concluded: “Come along and support your local brass band at either or both of these events for some enjoyable and good value entertainment.”
