First choral scholar chosen

AN ARBROATH choir have found their first scholar in a young local tenor.

Ruaridh Mathieson (17), a pupil at Arbroath High School, was this week named the first recipient of a £150 scholarship from the Arbroath Male Voice Choir.

The scholarship allows young men aged 17 and 18 to take part in the choir’s two big annual concerts.

After attending Monday evening choir practice Ruaridh secured a spot in the tenor section. He said: “The last few weeks have been amazing, all the guys in the choir are really friendly and its been a lot of fun. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the year.”

President of Arbroath Male Voice Choir Dr Richard Irving believes the scholarships are a fantastic opportunity.

He said: “The scholarships are an exciting opportunity for young men who enjoy singing.

“First of all, it’s great fun, but they also learn the discipline of singing in four-part harmony and get lessons in voice production and sight-reading.

“An added plus for them is that this sort of community involvement looks good on a CV when you are applying for jobs, or places at university or college.”

The choir are currently putting the finishing touches on their ‘Concert For Christmas’ programme which takes place at St Andrews Church on December 16.

The choir will be joined by solo soprano Maggie Findlay, the award-winning Arbroath Instrumental Band and will be led by musical director Sheena Guthrie.

Dr Irving added: “We have a great programme of songs this year, all designed to bring that warm glow inside!

“There is a pleasing mix of the melodiously haunting to the foot-tapping bright and breezy, so there is definitely something to please everyone.”
