ONE OF Arbroath’s oldest public houses, the Vine Bar, 22 Keptie Street, underwent a total transformation in the early part of 1985 after being acquired by local businessmen Allan Swan and Gwyn Rees.

The traditional bar and lounge format was done away with and converted into a single space open-plan facility the centrepiece of which was the colourfully decorated bar.

Our picture shows the opening ceremony in May of that year with the managing director of Maclay’s Brewers, Mr Jack Cubitt, pulling the first pint.

Also in the picture are, from left - Mr Swan, Mr Rees, Neil Girvan, manager, and John Ogilvie.

After the bar closed the property lay unused for a considerable time before being converted again by William Hill into a bookmaker’s shop. Unfortunately that also closed and the property is again vacant.
