ONE OF the most topical subjects in Arbroath at the moment is the Year of the Light programme, with various events organised to mark the bicentenary of the Bell Rock Lighthouse.

However, over 24 years ago, the Bell Rock was also in the news as groups and individuals in the town raised cash to house the light and lens which were being replaced by the Northern Lighthouse Board.

Our picture shows Jim Tracey (centre right), chairman of Arbroath and District Round Table, handing over a cheque for £200 to Major General Roger Ephraums, of the Save the Bell Rock light campaign, at a ceremony at the Inverpark Hotel in February, 1987.

Also pictured are, from left - Ian Cameron, Donald Grant, vice-chairman; Doug Clark, treasurer; Ross Cargill, secretary; Ken Smith; Brian Findlay, Allan Ramsay and Bill Flett.

The light and lens was gifted to Arbroath by the lighthouse authority and a purpose-built display room was constructed at Signal Tower Museum where it is still on show.
