On the occasion of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in June, 1953, the town took the opportunity to celebrate along with the rest of the United Kingdom.
In Keptie Street, George Fraser, proprietor of the Imperial Hotel, decorated his establishment with bunting, banners and shields as our picture shows.
The shop next to the main entrance to the hotel was a tobacconist run by Arbroath FC player, Colin McNab, who later went on to the Stag Inn and the Crown.
Next door was a branch of Willie Low's extensive empire, managed by a gentleman from Montrose, and the single story dwelling at right housed McKnight's fruit and vegetable shop and Shepherd's fish shop, at the corner of Catherine Street.
The gable visible above the single story building is that of the Waverley Temperance Hotel, an establishment where liquor was frowned upon, which was run by Mrs Fleming.
