Teens help Malawi orphans

ARBROATH teenagers held an event last week to raise money for an African centre they support.

A coffee morning was held in Arbroath’s St Andrew’s Church hall on Saturday to realise funds for the St Andrew’s Daycare and Orphan Centre in Malawi.

The Daycare Centre has been a project dear to the hearts of the St Andrew’s congregation over the last couple of years.

The centre helps orphaned children in the remote villages near Blantyre in Malawi, Central East Africa.

Blantyre in Malawi was named in honour of Scotland’s most famous adventurer David Livingston who founded a missionary in the village nearby.

So far the St Andrews Church group has helped to raise nearly £80,000 to this worthwhile cause, ensuring the orphans are fed two meals per day and are also taught English, reading and writing and arithmetic.

St Andrew’s Church sent 15 young people from Arbroath out to Kambilonjo in Malawi to build a play area and decorate the Daycare Centre and residence.

Yesterday (Thursday) the group leader, Sheila Dunphy and 14 volunteers flew to Nairobi, before driving across rough terrain to the orphan village of Namisu.

Anyone wishing to donate to Daycare and Orphan Centre can do so at St Andrews Church in Arbroath where they can also view photographs of the project.
