High speed question

DUNDEE East MP Stewart Hosie has asked transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin in the House of Commons of his intentions to extend high speed rail to Scotland.

The UK transport secretary outlined the preferred route which extends the already-planned London to Birmingham HS2 line to Manchester and Leeds.

He had earlier claimed that the HS2 extension would extend the benefits of the project to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

But commenting following the debate, Stewart Hosie MP said: “I asked the transport secretary, who is doing this in a phased way, when he will be able to inform us of a timescale for the high speed rail project to reach Scotland.

“I was told the government hope to have plans prior to the referendum on Scottish independence, due in autumn 2014.”
