Arbroath bus station upgrade
ARBROATH Bus Station will undergo improvement works from next week according to Angus Council.
Around £72,000 of work will be carried out by the authority to bring the facilities up to standard to meet the needs of the modern fleet of vehicles using the station.
The 10-week project will see the bus stances enlarged making it easier and safer for larger vehicles and minimising the risk of damage to buses while also enabling side access to vehicles.
Angus Council previously spent £583,000 on a number of enhancements to the station which included a new cafe, waiting room and accessible toilet facilities.
The authority’s transport spokesperson, Councillor Mairi Evans, welcomed the improvements. She said: “I am pleased that we are to undertake further improvement to the facilities at Arbroath Bus Station, which is an important transport hub for residents as well as a gateway to the town for visitors.”
During the project a small number of pick-up and set-down parking bays and two disabled bays will be removed.
Angus Council’s transport team is taking steps to contact the current users of these bays in order to advise them of suitable parking alternatives.
Arbroath West and Letham Independent councillor David Fairweather was pleased to see further investment in the town.
He said: “I’m absolutely delighted. A couple of years ago there was £530,000 spent on the bus station and to have this new investment in the bus station and Arbroath is absolutely superb.
“People can see how the council is working with others, including the bus companies, to make sure that we can say we have the best services that can be provided.”
Councillor Fairweather was particularly pleased to see more done to make the bus station as user friendly and accessible as possible.
He said: “The disabled are a part of the community as much as anybody is and they deserve the same facilities as the able bodied, so personally I think it’s a fantastic achievement.
“I’m delighted this can go forward and everybody will be on a level playing field.”
The number of stances in use will also be reduced by the work, but most services will continue unaffected.
However, the exceptions are the X7 (Dundee – Arbroath – Montrose - Aberdeen) and number 43 Kirkton Circular and the 44 Timmergreens - Cliffburn services.
Instead of X7 passengers embarking at the station the Dundee-bound service will pick up and set down at the bus stop on Burnside Drive at Lordburn, while the Aberdeen-bound service will use the Morrison’s stop on Burnside Drive.
The No. 43 Kirkton Circular and the No. 44 will also not call at the bus station, but instead will run direct via Catherine Street between the railway station and Lordburn.
Connections normally made by passengers at the bus station can instead be made at either Lordburn or the railway station depending on the service required.
These temporary arrangements are expected to come into service around February 18 and Stagecoach will have additional members of staff on hand to assist with queries.
